Understanding your insurance options can help you get coverage for the treatment you need.
Types of Insurance Coverage:
- Health Insurance: Many health insurance plans cover physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, registered dietitian, psychology services, orthotics, and custom bracing. Health Spending Accounts often cover services not covered under Alberta Health Services, or other extended health plans. Check with your insurance provider to see if these services are included in your plan.
- Motor Vehicle Accident Insurance: If you’ve been injured in a car accident, your Section B auto insurance may cover the cost of physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, and psychology services. Please follow this link for more information regarding motor vehicle accident injuries.
- Workers’ Compensation (WCB): If you’ve been injured at work, Workers’ Compensation Board Insurance may cover the cost of physiotherapy or chiropractic treatments. Please follow this link for more information regarding work injuries.
Coverage Details
Every plan is different. Your insurance may:
- Cover a percentage or the full treatment amount.
- Have an annual maximum per discipline or for all paramedical services combined.
- Allow the clinic to direct bill.
- In rare cases may require a referral from a physician.

To find out if your insurance covers services, contact your insurance provider. Be sure to have your policy number and any relevant details about your injury or treatment plan ready.
Insurance Providers
We Direct Bill to over 20 insurance providers. You may have coverage under your employee benefits or other third-party providers.
We have Direct-Billed most insurance companies, including:
(providers for) RCMP, DND, Canadian Forces, Veterans Affairs Interim Federal Health Plan (IFHP) for refugees and other groups

Coverage varies depending on your insurance plan. Check with your insurance provider for details.
Do I need prior approval from my insurance?
It is always helpful to understand your insurance prior to attending an appointment. In some cases, prior approval is required before treatment can begin, for programs such as Alberta Works, AHS funded physiotherapy for General MSK sessions and some IFHP claims.
How many treatments am I eligible for?
The number of treatments covered depends on your insurance plan.
Can I choose my physiotherapist or chiropractor?
Yes, you can choose your clinician. For WCB and AHS funding, you must go to a contracted clinic.
