AHS Funded Physio

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Funded Physiotherapy In Calgary

Momentum Health provides Alberta Health Service (AHS) funded physiotherapy in Calgary, to help get patients back to work, sport, and life. Our goal is to help patients improve function, better understand their conditions, and learn to be healthy and independent.

Patients who have sustained a fracture, had orthopedic surgery, or are qualifying as low-income will receive an assessment, treatment, and home exercise program with clear education to support and manage daily living, ongoing activity, and long-term recovery.

Alberta Health Services also covers some of our physician services.

What is covered by Alberta Health Services (AHS) Funded Physiotherapy in Calgary?

In general, this program provides funding for Physiotherapy for:

1. Recent fractures or orthopedic surgeries (e.g. bones and joints)

If there has been a recent fracture or orthopedic surgery, patients should book within 12 weeks of the procedure or injury date.

This includes an assessment and up to 4 treatments, 1 per week. Additional treatment for certain surgeries may be covered, subject to approval by the program. An appointment must be attended within 84 days of incident or procedure.

2. Recent hip or knee replacements

Post-op Hip & Knee Group Rehabilitation Services includes an assessment and up to 6 group sessions, once per week. In this stream, patients can access a group class funded by AHS to aid in their recovery from a hip or knee arthroplasty. There may also be an opportunity for 1:1 care. Call us for details.

When a person develops osteoarthritis (OA), the muscles around the hip or knee become weaker and do not function properly. Patients will learn exercises and strategies to help increase strength, mobility, and balance which improves your activities of daily living. By correcting daily movement patterns, participants will train their bodies to move properly, prevent symptom progression and reduce pain.

3. General joint or muscle conditions & injuries

Low-income Albertans may be eligible for virtual or in-person services for qualifying conditions, once per week. To start the process, call the Rehabilitation Advice Line (RAL) at 1-833-379-0563 ext. 1 (available Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). For more information, visit ahs.ca/ral. Albertans who receive the GST credit, are accessing Alberta Works coverage or AISH will very likely qualify for care.

Note for some individuals, the number of visits covered under AHS may not equal the total amount of care recommended for full recovery by your physiotherapist. Please talk to us about additional funding options.

How do I access Alberta Health Services (AHS) funded physiotherapy?

Albertans do not need a referral from a physician or healthcare professional to access AHS-funded physiotherapy. An Alberta Health Card is required to access this funding. Our Momentum Health clinics with a contract are able to access AHS funding directly.

What is the Rehabilitation Advice Line (RAL)?

The RAL is a telephone service that provides rehabilitation advice and general health information for Albertans of any age. The Rehabilitation Advice Line cannot book nor manage your physiotherapy appointments.

Low-income Albertans can call RAL to start the process for virtual or in-person AHS-funded services. Call the RAL at 1-833-379-0563 ext. 1, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then call us back. For more information, visit ahs.ca/ral.

If you have specific questions or need more information call our Care Centre at (403) 455-0025.
