How long should each Physiotherapy appointment take?

We provide customized, evidence-based care to all of our patients. To that end, your first visit will last up to an hour to give our therapists time to conduct a detailed physical assessment, learn more about your specific needs, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Follow-up visits usually range from 30 to 60 minutes.

The number and duration of visits will depend on your individual needs. We recommend attending more frequent visits in the initial stages of therapy to maximize your progress, as discussed with your therapist.

As you advance through treatment, you will generally see your therapist two to three times per week, with fewer weekly visits and more extended periods between meetings.

Momentum Health is committed to helping you achieve your fitness and performance goals through regular physiotherapy sessions.

Can my physiotherapist diagnose me?

Yes! Firstly, it’s essential to understand what a diagnosis is. Essentially, it’s a process by which an expert identifies the cause or nature of a disease, disorder, or other medical condition. This process typically involves collecting information about a patient’s symptoms, medical history, and physical examination results. Additional imaging may be needed.

Physiotherapy aims to find a diagnosis but also to help you optimize your health and fitness. While a diagnosis plays an essential role in this process, it’s not the only focus of a physiotherapy visit. A diagnosis may help our experts to better understand your symptoms, but ultimately, our goal is finding solutions to your concerns.

To do that effectively, our physiotherapist will start with a comprehensive physical examination and health history, including learning about the diagnoses you’ve received. In addition, we’ll collaborate with physicians to confirm or explore potential contradictions to a diagnosis, ensuring the accuracy of your diagnosis and the appropriateness of your treatment plan.

You can trust the team at Momentum Health to consider any conditions you’ve been diagnosed with, alongside other key factors, when they develop your customized treatment plan. We’re committed to examining your specific circumstances as we work through your physiotherapy!

Can all physiotherapists order x-rays and ultrasound Imaging?

Physiotherapists who have taken additional training are authorized to refer patients for x-rays and ultrasound imaging. These tests are used conservatively to assist in establishing a diagnosis, to assist in interventional procedures, or in clinical decision making. All Momentum Health clinics have clinicians who have been authorized by the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta to order diagnostic imaging.

How can I tell if I will benefit from physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy can strengthen your muscles, increase your endurance, improve your range of motion, help you avoid a sedentary lifestyle, and much more! In short, physiotherapy offers a wealth of benefits for anyone looking to get and stay active.

Depending on your situation, physiotherapy may be the only solution you need, or your physiotherapist at Momentum Health will be part of a collaborative team with multiple healthcare professionals. Either way, our experts will get a full picture of your needs before developing a scientifically-backed treatment plan tailored just for you.

If you think you might benefit from physiotherapy, contact us today to book an appointment and learn more about your options!

When will I start to see results?

We know how anxious you are to see the results of your therapy. Unfortunately, there isn’t any one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Your timeline can vary based on your health and fitness levels when you started, whether or not you’re recovering from an injury, the severity of your condition, and much more.

It’s also important to understand that physiotherapy, as a rule, is not a quick fix but a process that takes time, effort, and dedication. You may start to feel some improvement in your symptoms after a few sessions, but it may take weeks or even months to achieve optimal results.

We can guarantee that our therapists will explain the process to you every step of the way. We’ll keep detailed records of your condition, symptoms, treatments, and overall progress to ensure you’re advancing the way we expect. If something isn’t working, we’ll work to find a solution that does.

If you have any questions about your treatment plan or physiotherapy timeline, please do not hesitate to discuss them with our experts. The more we know about your experience with treatment, the better we can tailor our approach to maximize your efforts!

Do treatments hurt?

If you exercise regularly, you’re likely familiar with the concept of “good” pain (such as muscles burning from fatigue) and “bad” pain (such as a sharp, shooting pain in your joint). Physiotherapy operates in much the same way.

While our physiotherapists are not purposefully trying to hurt you, there may be times when a treatment triggers a temporary pain response. But like a fatigued muscle, that pain response is a normal part of the process. A bit of pain now will lead to improved movement in the long term.

It’s especially important to keep the concept of normal versus abnormal pain in mind if you’re recovering from surgery. You’ll likely experience some pain as you work to restore strength and range of motion in your recuperating muscles – but this type of pain will ultimately reduce your overall pain levels and promote your mobility.

Similarly, you may have begun avoiding specific movements if you’re experiencing imbalances or impairments in your musculoskeletal system. As you start to perform those movements again, you may experience some initial discomfort.

It’s vital that you communicate any pain or other sensations you experience during treatment to your physiotherapist. This information helps us fully understand your progress and allows us to make necessary adjustments or other modifications.

How is my progress tracked?

Because we take an evidence-based approach to physiotherapy here at Momentum Health, tracking your progress is a significant part of our process! Keeping good records is essential to understanding if your treatment is working as intended or if we need to make any adjustments.

We’ll track changes in your physical capabilities, functional movements, and overall fitness to ensure you progress. Depending on the reason for your treatment, we’ll likely track most of the following:

  • Range of motion
  • Strength (i.e., power, speed, endurance)
  • Functional mobility
  • Coordination and agility
  • Specific movements, such as repetitive movements, squatting, lunging, or running

We’ll also track any impairments you might be experiencing, such as pain or swelling.

Our therapists will help you set specific, realistic goals for your therapy sessions so you have a complete picture of what exactly you’re working toward. We’re committed to helping you achieve optimal results in your performance, function, and overall health.

You may be asked to fill out a questionnaire called a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) which tells us your health status at assessment and discharge. This helps us measure the impact of our services. Some insurance companies require these be filled out as a condition of coverage.

Why does physiotherapy take longer than expected?

We know you’re eager to get back to the activities you love. Unfortunately, physiotherapy can be a slow process, depending on the reason for your treatment. Our evidence-based approach means we’re always looking for the best, most proven options, but some impairments and injuries simply take a long time to rehabilitate.

It’s also important to remember that at Momentum Health, we’re treating the cause of your pain, not the symptoms. Because our treatments aren’t just superficial, it’s understandable that some may take longer than expected.

Our therapists will work with you to find a solution that works as quickly as possible without sacrificing safety. One factor that can help speed up your recovery is actually – you! By attending your scheduled therapy sessions and following your therapist’s instructions (such as completing at-home exercises or taking a break from intensive training), you will start to see improvements.

Our team wants to see you succeed. We’re committed to helping you optimize your fitness and accomplish your goals. Whether your treatment takes a few weeks or several months, you can rest assured that every approach we take is backed by science and proven to work

Can I continue seeing a therapist even when I feel better?

The short answer is – Absolutely! In fact, at Momentum Health, we actually encourage you to continue seeing your physiotherapist even after your symptoms appear to have resolved.

Why? Because often, even though you feel better, you may still not be fully rehabilitated. Furthermore, regular physiotherapy can prevent future injury or pain while helping you optimize your overall physical performance and function.

Physiotherapy is a comprehensive and ongoing process, not a one-and-done. Even after you’ve completed your initial round of treatment, our therapists can help you develop a personalized maintenance plan that ensures you’re continuing to maximize your potential, even after your recovery.

Here’s an example of maintenance plans that allow you to continue enjoying physiotherapy’s many benefits:

  • Your therapist assigns you a series of specialized at-home exercises so you can continue to strengthen your muscles and improve your range of motion.
  • You come in for a re-evaluation after a month to ensure your home exercise program is working as intended.
  • You schedule check-in appointments at regular intervals (such as every six months) to ensure you haven’t regressed and to address any new developments.

Our clinicians will also develop a return-to-activity schedule so you can safely return to your favourite sport or workout program while minimizing the risk of reinjury. A return-to-activity schedule involves gradually increasing the intensity of certain movements until you can operate as usual.

The physiotherapists at Momentum Health are here to help you succeed – even after you’ve completed your treatment. To get started, book an appointment today!

How long does chiropractic care typically last?

The duration of chiropractic care can vary depending on various factors, including the condition’s severity, your overall health, and your treatment goals.

In general, chiropractic care at Momentum Health is a collaborative approach to healthcare that focuses on improving the function of the musculoskeletal system and reducing pain and discomfort. For most people, chiropractic care is not a quick fix but a comprehensive approach requiring planned treatment and follow-through to achieve the best results.

Initial treatment plans may involve frequent visits to address acute pain or injuries. As you progress, you’ll likely reduce the frequency of your visits. However, it’s important to note that ongoing care can help prevent the recurrence of symptoms and provide long-term health benefits.

Your Momentum Health chiropractor will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and goal, including your treatment’s schedule and duration. As you work through your program, your chiropractor will regularly evaluate your progress using several different measurements, such as pain levels and range of motion. If something’s not working, they’ll adjust your treatment accordingly.

Why do joints pop during chiropractic adjustments?

You may hear a popping or cracking sound during your chiropractic adjustment. This sound is completely normal and occurs due to a sudden release of gas bubbles in the joint fluid. The gas bubbles form when the pressure within the joint changes, such as when you crack your knuckles – or when our Momentum Health chiropractors manipulate or adjust your joints.

Chiropractic adjustments at Momentum Health in Creekside, Deerfoot, Mahogany, Ogden, Seton, Westbrook, West Springs, Evidence North, Evidence South and National Spine & Wellness are a scientifically-backed way to improve joint function, reduce pain, and increase mobility. How is my progress measured?

Our clinicians know the importance of measuring your impairments and functional limitations so we can better design a customized treatment plan and more easily track your progress during the course of your treatment.

We’ll look at objective measurements of your physical capabilities, including specific tests of fitness such as the following:

  • Range of motion
  • Strength (i.e., power, speed, endurance)
  • Functional mobility
  • Coordination and agility
  • Balance
  • Neurology (reflexes, sensation, muscle tone)
  • Joint mobility and ligament laxity

We’ll also look at impairments that can impact your comfort and physical ability, including the following:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Weakness
  • Loss of motion
  • Paresthesias (prickling or tingling sensations)

Functional limitations are the final piece of the puzzle. These limitations affect your ability to do everyday tasks like the following:

  • Sitting
  • Standing
  • Squatting and lunging
  • Walking and stepping up and down
  • Running and jumping

Testing for sports and specific job demands is very important for individuals that compete (elite athletes) or work (First Responders) at a high level and need to be able to count on their bodies to excel.

By tracking your overall fitness markers, physical impairments, and functional abilities throughout the course of your treatment, our physiotherapists have an objective picture of your progress, allowing us to adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

You may be asked to fill out a questionnaire called a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) which tells us your health status at assessment and discharge. This helps us measure the impact of our services. Some insurance companies require these be filled out as a condition of coverage.

We also want to hear from you. Your feedback and personal assessments are an invaluable part of this process, as they help us more fully understand your improvements, regressions, or stagnation. If your therapy deviates from its expected path, our therapists will reassess the situation and make necessary adjustments or recommendations for further evaluation or treatments.

Our ultimate goal is to help you notice tangible improvements in your performance, functionality, and overall well-being. Tracking your impairments, limitations, and progress are all key to accomplishing that goal.

You can trust our evidence-based expertise to help you achieve your sports and fitness goals!

How long is each appointment going to be?

Appointment durations vary based on individual needs and the discipline and service you are receiving. Physiotherapy initial sessions typically last for up to 1 hour. Subsequent sessions generally range from 45-60 minutes.

Generally speaking, your clinician will want to see you more often in the early stages of your therapy, as this will help them assess your progress and confirm you’re on the right treatment plan. At first, you’ll likely attend sessions twice a week, then space them out as you proceed through treatment.

Our clinicians will work with you to determine the best length and frequency of your appointments to ensure your optimal progress.

Will my insurance cover the cost of treatment?

We understand that navigating insurance can be complex, which is why our team at Momentum Health is here to help answer your questions and provide guidance. We recommend contacting your insurance carrier to confirm coverage based on your specific policy.

Insurance plans are not designed specifically to you or your injury. Additional treatment may be recommended after your insurance plan has been exhausted. Your clinician will always inform you of what is medically indicated to achieve maximum clinical results. However, please discuss financial limitations to your clinician, so that they set up a Plan of Care that works for you.

You can also visit our insurance plans page for more information.

For your convenience, we provide a variety of payment options.

What do physiotherapists do?

Momentum Health’s team of highly skilled physiotherapists is committed to improving your fitness and quality of life through personalized care backed up by research. Physiotherapists offer a diverse array of treatments, each designed to address specific patient needs and conditions. The choice of treatment depends on the patient’s diagnosis, physical capabilities, and treatment goals. We accomplish this goal through the use of different treatment approaches, including the following:

  1. Exercise Therapy: This includes a range of therapeutic movements and exercises tailored to improve strength, range of motion, endurance, and flexibility. Exercises can also be designed for rehabilitation post-injury or surgery and for managing chronic conditions.
  2. Manual Therapy: Techniques such as massage, mobilization, and manipulation are used to enhance joint function, relieve pain, and improve circulation. This category includes stretching and manual resistance training.
  3. Electrotherapy: Physiotherapists use electrical energy for pain relief and to stimulate muscle function. Techniques include Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), ultrasound therapy, and laser therapy.
  4. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat or cold to affected areas can help reduce pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms and can promote healing.
  5. Dry Needling (IMS): These techniques involve inserting needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain and improve physical functioning.
  6. Education: Providing information on posture, ergonomics, and correct movement techniques is crucial in preventing injuries and managing chronic conditions effectively. Physiotherapists also offer advice on equipment use, such as walkers and braces.
  7. Respiratory Techniques: For patients with respiratory issues, physiotherapists can teach techniques to improve lung function and aid in clearing secretions from the respiratory tract.

Gait Training and Mobility Aids: For patients who struggle with walking or mobility, physiotherapists provide training to improve gait mechanics and may recommend and customize mobility aids like crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs.

Each of these treatments can be used alone or in combination, tailored to the individual’s specific needs and progress. The ultimate goal is to help patients achieve the highest possible level of independence and quality of life.

Our therapists will also provide you with detailed information about your condition, including prevention measures, education, and more. If you’ve been injured or undergone surgery, we’ll help you rehabilitate afterward and develop return-to-activity schedules so you don’t risk re-injury.
