Common Conditions Treated by Our Women’s Health Physiotherapists

Women’s health is a specialized field that addresses conditions unique to women throughout their lifespans. Our dedicated physiotherapists are trained in Women’s Health, and work diligently to improve our patients’ quality of life, implementing evidence-based treatments that are personalized to your needs. We empower women with knowledge, resilience, and tools to confidently navigate their health journey.

Our women’s health physiotherapists in Creekside, Deerfoot, Mahogany, Ogden, Seton, Westbrook, West Springs, Evidence North, Evidence South and National Spine & Wellness address the most common conditions of pelvic floor dysfunction and prenatal and postpartum care, including the following:

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

These disorders often stem from the natural hormonal changes of menopause, and from events like childbirth and some surgical procedures. Symptoms can include urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain. Statistics show that up to one-third of women will experience a pelvic floor disorder in their lifetime.

Prenatal Care

Physiotherapists can help manage musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction associated with pregnancy, as well as assist in preparing expectant mothers for labour and delivery. Pregnant women who learn effective breathing and pushing techniques can improve their birth experiences and outcomes.

Postpartum Care

Many new mothers experience pelvic floor and abdominal muscle weakness after having a baby. Pelvic Health Physiotherapists can assist women in strengthening these muscle groups, addressing scar tissue, and returning to the activities they love.

Endometriosis

Pelvic floor physiotherapy will not cure your endometriosis. It may, however, provide some much-needed pain relief. Managing endometriosis usually requires multiple strategies, as there are often multiple sources of pain.

Osteoporosis

This condition is more prevalent in women than men. It causes bones to weaken, which can increase the risk of fractures and falls. Physiotherapy for osteoporosis can help build bone strength and prevent falls.

Lymphedema

Often a side effect of cancer treatment, this condition causes swelling due to a blockage in the lymphatic system. Physiotherapists help manage and reduce symptoms.

Chronic Pelvic Pain

This can be caused by endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, or other conditions. Physiotherapy can help alleviate pain and discomfort.

Through physiotherapy, we can help manage these symptoms, improve physical function, and empower women to take control of their health. Our treatments are tailored to each individual’s needs based on the most current, peer-reviewed research.

Our dedicated physiotherapists are here to guide you through every step. Call (403) 455-0025 today to schedule an assessment!

What to Expect at Your Women’s Health Physiotherapy Sessions

At Momentum Health, our compassionate physiotherapists are ready to provide a comprehensive evaluation and an individualized treatment plan for your unique women’s health condition or disorder.

Our first step is obtaining a thorough medical history to understand your experiences, identify patterns, and gain insight into potential lifestyle or genetic factors influencing your health. By exploring your health history, we gain the contextual knowledge to create a therapy plan that truly caters to your needs.

Next, we observe and assess your body’s ability to move. We identify areas of strength, weakness, and potential compensation that can guide us in devising a balanced, targeted treatment plan.

Our physiotherapists rely on scientifically-backed methods to create the most effective treatment plans. Our women’s health physiotherapy involves a range of treatment strategies tailored to meet the needs of each patient, including:

  • Pelvic Floor Exercises: Often known as Kegel exercises, these are particularly effective in treating urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
  • Manual Therapy: This hands-on approach to physiotherapy can include a variety of techniques, such as joint mobilization and soft tissue massage techniques to surrounding areas such as the back and hips, that include myofascial release, active release, petrissage, effleurage and trigger point release target tight muscles and fascia. These techniques can aid in promoting relaxation, improved range of motion, and circulation.
  • Biofeedback: This treatment involves using cuing to make patients aware of specific physiological functions they are normally unaware of.
  • Exercise Prescription: Therapeutic exercises can help with a variety of health conditions, and could include elements like strength training, flexibility exercises, or low-impact cardio workouts.
  • Education and Lifestyle Modification: As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, education about lifestyle modifications such as diet, weight management, and proper ergonomics can significantly improve patient outcomes.

Each method is chosen based on the proven ability to yield results, ensuring you can trust the strategy behind your treatment. With a focus on individualized care, a commitment to evidence-based methods, and a track record of improved function, Momentum Health is here to guide you on your path to better women’s health.
